Meeting 1
Created roles for team. Created group excel file to share information and work.
Meeting 2
The South End Community Fridge is able to enact their theory of change through providing food directly in the hands of people who need it via the fridge. The fridge is able to foster a feeling of love and care for ones community by enabling people to spare what they can and know they are positively impacting someone. The fridge helps facilitate interactions between those who are able to donate with those who are in need. The fridge works to create empathy for a community which enables people who need help in the community to be more likely to get it, and the fridge puts the food directly in the hands of those in need.
The South End Community Fridge provides food directly to those who need it, as long as they can reach it. What this is doing is providing individuals with meals when they may not be able to normally afford it, so it is really a great thing. Currently the South End Fridge is the only unit, it would great one day for this to be a more city-wide effort.
Meeting 3
The team decided that we should put together a to do list. The list was as followed:
We will split up these tasks between members.
Meeting 4
This meeting also involved Jen. Our team wanted to know, when pertaining to social media – what kind of things are you hoping us to make?
We learned that Jen would update Instagram on a normal basis but not anymore. Hit or miss on social media, would be great to take it over – also take a look at website to see if anything needs to be updated there as well. Events for example. Need to get login info.
Food pantry or events people are interested in for posts. Food access.
Canned goods, shampoos, whatever we would like to do
Food Drive – what do we have in mind?
Drive was for actual products not cash. People usually drop off products.
Church from Allston provides a lot of donations. Other groups as well.
Class Exercise Meeting
When working at the fridge and individuals come up to take out food, it is a big realization that occurs. This fridge really is used by individuals who are hungry and it inspired me to work harder and try to get more food for the fridge itself.
The fridge actually not being legal is a big issue that we need to work on.
Meeting 5
Summarized how much money we have raised as well as food donation, through tabling. Need to get some more places to donate, which means we need to be sending out more emails.
We also put together a list of tasks to take care of, which are as follows:
Outreach email template:
“I’m currently volunteering with the South End Community Fridge through Northeastern University’s service-learning program. I’m hoping to help establish some partnerships with local restaurants to reduce food waste and help keep the fridge stocked. We hope you are interested in donating any excess food that you have at the end of the day, no matter how small it may be to the South End Community Fridge at 549 Columbus Ave, Boston, MA 02118. Members of the community to rely on the fridge to reduce the burden of food on their budget, but we often don't have enough for everyone. With your help we can positively impact members of our community in need.”
Need to put forth efforts to make fridge well known as well as creating new fridges.
Meeting with Laura 7/29
Learned about CSA. Community supported agriculture - january, february farms sell shares. Costs depend on the size of the share. 15-20 weeks of fruits and veggies. Help farmers get paid upfront and the amount of money you give, you end up getting 20-30% more during a good year- depends on the year, currently in a drought. Tons of farms around do it. Some farms bring their produce to the city. Suggested targets mentioned as well.
