Fridge ChampionFridge champions are expected to do multiple tasks when they sign up for a shift. These tasks include.....
The Fridge Champion schedule showed all of the people that had signed up for a shift each day which was organized in spreadsheets for each month. It appeared that the typical amount of fridge shifts signed up for a week was 1-2. Our group was able to double these normal rates and help ensure the fridge was clean nearly every day between all of us. When the fridge was particularly empty we would deep clean the entire fridge so it would be ready to be stocked again. |
Meeting Community MembersIt is also recommended that fridge champions try and connect to those utilizing the fridge and learn their stories if the volunteer feels comfortable. Several of our group members had amazing interactions with the community members where we leaned the items they hoped the fridge would have (often fresh fruits and vegetables). These community members would also share how appreciative they were for the existence of the fridge. They shared that the fridge helped alleviate their concerns whether they be in regard to staying within budget or knowing where their next meal was coming from.
We also began to feel a connection with the fridge the more we volunteered. Seeing people benefit from the fridge after we helped ensure it was clean was very rewarding and filled us with a sense of pride. After each of our first visits to the fridge we all felt that we needed to do more to help the community, so we each began bringing items to each of our shifts at the fridge. |
